It turns out, "getconf ARG_MAX" returns "undefined", which is not a valid integer, causing more and more obscure breakage as the build proceeds. Actually, things are a bit weird: when called from a command line, "getconf ARG_MAX" returns 2097152, yet from your ./configure, it's somehow -1, which the getconf tool returns as "undefined".
