Is cross architecture support possible?

a sparc as apt-proxy server
with i386 apt-proxy clients

That is fine - the files in the archive have a different path name depending
on the architecture of the package. apt-proxy does not care about the
architecture of the files that it serves. You just need to make sure your
backend server has all of the architectures you need.
Closing this bug since it seems to be more of a question than a bug report.
