I booted a stock Debian Linux kernel (linux-image-2.6.18-6-686) using the "vga" boot parameter to select an initial video mode. I used vga=ask, then selected the desired mode from a menu. In my case, the mode selected was an 80x34 mode (80 columns wide by 34 lines deep) rather than the default of 80x25. The video mode was properly set by the video BIOS, and the kernel boot messages were displayed properly in the requested video mode until the /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh startup script ran. During execution of this script, the video mode changed somehow to an 80x29 video mode. This is similar to, but not identical to, bugs 312408 and 381641. In 312408, the bug reporter indicated a reset to mode 80x25. In my case, it reverted to 80x29. In 381641, the bug reporter indicated that the bottom half of the screen was not visible. In my case, I am running on a Dell Dimension 4400, using an nVidia Corporation NV11 video card, based on the GeForce2 MX/MX 400 chipset. (This is a PCI-bus video card.) The monitor supports DDC, but not DDC2, hence no EDID. The monitor is an IBM 9524-001, circa 1993. If I put an "exit" statement (without the quotes) as the first non-comment line in /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh, the video mode is not corrupted. This leaves me with the hardware font supplied by the video card, but at least the video mode is not corrupted.
