If emacs is run in some (admittedly brain-dead) way that makes its
process group not be the same as the process group of the terminal it is
connected to, then it happily uses the terminal, setting it up however
it likes. On exit though, it takes a lot of care to make sure that
tcgetpgrp == getpgrp, and if not, refuses to reset the terminal, and
leaves it in whatever raw, stair-steppy mode it put it into when it
started up.
The easiest way to reproduce this is find a terminal with no programs
connected to it, and run emacs > /dev/terminal < /dev/terminal . Then
after you exit emacs, direct something else to the terminal and watch
the fun. Tends to be most interesting if the terminal is an xterm.
I think I'd rather it did this check at startup, or not at all, but what
do I know.
