Has there ever been a time when a Debian system did not leave boot
messages on the screen before displaying the login prompt? With the
present getty from util-linux this no longer happens; clearing the
screen before presenting the prompt is now the default.

I suppose you could provide an inittab with the --noclear option to
getty in it but surely, at the least, a mention of the change in the
traditional behaviour in NEWS.Debian is worth a line or two?

Messages are displayed on the console screen during booting. These
messages are now cleared before the login prompt is displayed. This
is a change introduced by upstream and my request was not to alter
this behaviour but to document it.

At the time I made the request I thought users who were used to the
previous behaviour might benefit from being pointed in the direction
of the --noclear option. After two years and nothing particularly in
the way of complaints I think it is time to close this bug report.

Regards,

Brian.
