udev hangs every time on bootup for me, trying to start the daemon. I finally
tried going through the scripts in /etc/rcS.d/ one at a time to find out that
it needed some basic networking set up; a little googling with that clue
found one person suggesting that it's a conflict with the use of LDAP in
nsswitch.conf, which I do use (and lots of people complaining about nvidia).
(I "fixed" it by moving it to start as S41, rather than S04, and manually
loading the network driver.)
It would be really nice if udevd could be fixed, so that it doesn't hang in
this case.
Failing that, is it possible to start it later on in the boot process, if
ldap is present?
Failing even that, a comment in /etc/init.d/udev, or in /usr/share/doc/udev,
giving LDAP as a possible cause of bootup hangs would save some time
for other people in my position.

It looks like your configuration is broken.
I am not sure about how it can be fixed, I do not used LDAP. But udev
needs to do these user/group lookups before anything has been loaded.

I do not think that udev needs to be fixed, but whatever handles the
LDAP lookups instead.
