Sometimes when you're running an unstable or even testing machine, a package
will break, and you'll want to revert back to the version you were using
previously.
Autoclean breaks that functionality.
Also, for better or worse, some people use a nfs export for their apt
archive, and APT::Clean-Installed will break that also. As for that case I
have the nfs export scanned by tmpreaper to delete files not accessed or
modified in the last 30 days. It works for my purposes, though it won't
help if the package hasn't been used in the last 30 days.
I'm not really asking for autoclean's functionality to be removed, and
realise having apt's cache on nfs is a special configuration, but maybe
there is a more general solution that can be agreed apon -- even to the
degree of cloning this bug to apt and giving an option for autoclean to keep
X versions of a package in the cache.
