the version of vim that comes with debian is built with the following flags

Some very useful plugins (eg. you-compleme-me) require vim to be built with
python.
As python2 is installed by default on a debian system, having vim compiled with
python support would be helpful.

You can install any one of vim-nox, vim-gtk, vim-gnome, or vim-athena
to get the Python support. vim and vim-tiny are the only packages
which don't have it enabled.
