Package: msmtp
Version: 1.4.31-1
Severity: wishlist

Dear maintainer,

I find myself in the situation where OpenSSL is currently compatible with my email provider (pobox.com) and GnuTLS isn't (because of out-of-order intermediate certs, which it turns out OpenSSL is tolerant to and GnuTLS isn't). I would be interested in an msmtp linked against OpenSSL.

It looks like msmtp is licensed under GPL with no OpenSSL exception, but since upstream is largely one author who clearly intended their code to work with OpenSSL, it seems like it's worth asking for the licensing exception. Has this conversation already happened? If not, I'm happy to post to the mailing list asking for the exception, if you're open to changing the Debian packaging to link against OpenSSL instead.

It looks like there is another outstanding bug against msmtp (#745174) that also seems like OpenSSL would resolve it. Unfortunately, GnuTLS seems to be kind of a rare client for commercial email providers to support or test against, but OpenSSL is pretty popular on all platforms. I will separately report a bug against GnuTLS to address my specific issue, but converging on OpenSSL seems like it would also address both my current problem and several others.

Thanks for your attention, and also thanks for maintaining the msmtp package -- I use it daily for both personal and work email, and it works so well that I generally don't have to think about it. :)
