Package: foomatic-filters
Version: 3.0.2-20061031-1.2
Severity: normal

Hello,

I can't print a .dvi file using foomatic-rip together with LPRng (didn't
try CUPS).

The problem is that the dvi file gets converted inappropriately. After
reading man pages and other documentation included with foomatic-rip and
a2ps, I can say that a2ps discovers the file type properly as "(dvi)",
but the resulting output on my printer is a sequence of control
chacacters, neatly embedded in your typical a2ps page frame (featuring
the printing date etc., and a bogus file name).

Initially, I tried with different settings, namely "automatic converter,
and automatic gs selection", but it would not help. I also enabled
logging in foomatic-rip. The section containing the conversion sequence
seems to be this (the original dvi file is one page long):

Reading PostScript input ...
Job does not start with "%!", is it PostScript?
Starting file converter
Starting converter for non-PostScript files
tail process done reading data from STDIN
KID2 finished
file converter PID kid2=3135
file converter command: a2ps -1 --medium=A4dj --center-title="daemon@birch" -o -
[stdin (plain): 10 pages on 10 sheets]
[Total: 10 pages on 10 sheets] sent to the standard output
[27 lines wrapped]
--> This document is DSC-conforming!
KID1 finished

What's really strange is that if I simply convert the file on the
command line, using this command:

$ a2ps -1  --medium=A4dj  --center-title="daemon@birch"  -o - brief.dvi >
/tmp/b.ps

("brief.dvi" is the input file in all cases)

the resulting file "/tmp/b.ps" contains exactly what I want it to
contain.

Kind regards,
--Toni++
