If I have (setq scroll-margin 10) in my .emacs file then the scrolling works as
I like it. However, if I add (setq-default show-trailing-whitespace t) then the
scrolling reverts to "normal" emacs behaviour.
Even if I set show-trailing-whitespace per buffer using a hook it disables
"sensible" scrolling for that buffer only.

I can't reproduce this in the current Emacs, 24.3.
If you still see the issue with 24.3, I suggest opening a new report directly
with upstream.
