There's an issue with the processing done in the List.pm file (documented here:
https://sourcesup.renater.fr/scm/viewvc.php/branches/sympa-6.1-branch/src/lib/List.pm?root=sympa&r1=7560&r2=7559&pathrev=7560)
that causes the main process (/usr/bin/perl /usr/lib/sympa/bin/sympa.pl) to
die under a variety of conditions. This issue is still present in the current
Debian version (6.1.11~dfsg-5+deb7u1).
Manually applyign the above fix (changing the call from "my $body =
$msg->bodyhandle->as_string();" to "my $body =
$part->bodyhandle->as_string();") corrects the behavior and keeps teh service
running as expected.
