When using rsync to perform backups, a preserve atime option becomes
extremely desireable. Certain MUAs depend on atime preservation to
determine whether a mailbox has new mail. Making backup runs as
transparent as possible also just makes sense.
This issue has been discussed extensively in the past:
http://rsync.samba.org/cgi-bin/rsync.fom?file=13
http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2001-September/000139.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2001/debian-user-200109/msg01934.html
http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2002-September/003656.html
http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2003-August/006858.html
The problem seems to be that atime cannot be "preserved" without causing
the ctime to change. Well, no kidding. But then the patch to enable
this *optional* feature keeps getting ignored because this side-effect
may cause confused and uninformed people to become confused and
uninformed, and because some people have seen the equivalent feature in
tar and cpio be abused in the past. The suggestion of noting this
specific side effect in the documentation is also ignored.
And no, remount a filesystem with noatime before running rsync, then
remount it again without noatime afterwards, is not an elegant solution.
I don't really expect anything to happen as a result of logging this
bug, but I couldn't find it on the list and it really is something that
needs to be fixed at some point.
Thanks.
