This was very recently also reported in [1] and discussed extensively in 
that bug report and a bug report [2] cloned off it. This issue has been 
added to the errata for Sarge [3].
The issue is no longer present in the installer for Etch.

I am closing your bug report, but only because the issue is already 
covered in depth in #340981 and #341173.
