Audacity is not configurable under /Edit/Preferences/Devices the only option
that works
for recording audio is 'Default'. A setup with two soundcards is not possible.
When I
record audio in spite of these limitations, it hangs after about eight minutes,
regardles of 'Quality' settings, or sooner if I try to record in the background
and do
other things simultaneously. I am running a custom built kernel configured for
desktop
use and for this particular computer. Maybe it has to do with the snd-ca0106
kernel
module. This does not work properly with vlc either.

Recording audio works basically without any problems.
On my PC I had to blacklist the onboard snd_hda_intel of the HDMI-interface
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.conf , which I am not using anyway.
In practice, when you want to use both, HDMI-audio and a soundcard, one would
probably
have to make sure, that the soundcard-driver is loaded first, before the other
driver-module, in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf .
I cannot tell, what the situation in current oldstble Debian is, but in the
worst case,
one has to upgrade to Wheezy, which should be OK for anyone interested in
multimedia.
