Package: lout-common
Version: 3.31-1
Severity: important
Hello Ray,
There is a circular dependency between lout-common and lout:
lout-common :Depends: lout
lout :Depends: lout-common (= 3.31-1)
Circular dependencies are known to cause problems during upgrade,
so we should try to get rid of them.
Since lout-common is a data package, it is quite likely it does not need
actually to depend on lout and removing this dependency would
remove the circular dependency, so I would suggest you do so.
However since /usr/share/doc/lout-common is a symlink, policy requires
that if the dependencies is removed, then usr/share/doc/lout-common
should be made a directory and the preinst should remove the old
/usr/share/doc/lout-common symlink due to the way dpkg handle
symlink and directory.
The same apply to /usr/share/doc/gnumeric-common by the way.
Cheers,

Changes:
lout (3.31-2) unstable; urgency=medium
.
* Do away with the circular dependency between lout and lout-common as
circular dependencies are problematic in some upgrade scenarios.
(Closes: #341986)
* [debian/control] Replaced lout-common Depends: lout by a Suggests:
dependency.
* [debian/rules] Don't symlink /usr/share/doc/lout-common to
/usr/share/doc/lout ; instead, let debhelper create a
/usr/share/doc/lout-common documentation directory.
* [debian/lout-common.preinst] New. As dpkg won't replace a symlink with
a directory, remove the symlink to make things work.
* [debian/control] Use '*' rather than 'o' as the bullet character in the
descriptions to improve formatting in aptitude. (Closes: #338972)
* [debian/compat] New. Switch to debhelper compatibility level 5.
* [debian/control] Tighten debhelper build dependency accordingly.
* [debian/rules] No longer specify debhelper compatibility level here.
* [debian/copyright] Updated.
