Package: procps
Version: 2:3.3.10-4
Severity: wishlist

Since procps 3.3.10 the /usr/bin/free utility is missing the
"+/- buffers/cache" line. Downgrading to 3.3.9 fixes the problem.

-8<-
% free
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 16273860 11579284 548640 30532 4145936 4538364
Swap: 0 0 0
-8<-

Is it possible to get the old behavior back? Why has it been changed?

This was intentional because the values showing in old free were
incorrect. The problem is that Linux memory management has evolved and
free hadn't kept up. slabs were not considered properly for example.
The long answer is found in [1]
