After upgrading 25 machines running jessie today, the file
/usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache
has multiplied its size by 500 on two of the 25 machines. This is the
combined result of "ls -l /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache" in
all the machines:

Actually, only the first one grew by that amount by itself. The
current sizes for the first and the second one are the result of
trying "dpkg-reconfigure gnome-icon-theme" on those machines.
During the upgrade, some additional packages may be installed (which,
I admit, could make the cache file to be bigger), but in either case,
the final set of packages is exactly the same on all the computers, so
this discrepancy in file sizes does not seem to be justified.
Moreover, AFAIK, cache files belong in /var, not /usr, I'll file a
separate bug for that.

Since 3.13.3, the cache files no longer contain any image content,
making the cache files much smaller:
$ du -hs /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache
112K /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache
