as you wrote, it's not a hard dependency just a Recommends. So as the
default settings by the debian-installer is to enable install
Recommends, you get all packages that marked as Recommends by
apt|aptitude install.
We was long thinking about this change for iceowl-extension and came to
the conclusion to increase the setting from Suggest to Recommends mainly
because the main users already install booth packages as they want a
calendar in the email suite. And second related by the change that
Mozilla did, if you install Thunderbird you have now to drop out the
calendar.
And third, we often got bug reports that there not related to Debian but
to a Lightning version that wasn't compatible. And 5MB of space isn't
taht much.
So no, we wont change this in the near future. If you don't want
iceowl-extension just remove the package, it wont be reinstalled as you
set the package to manually removed by this. calendar-google-provider is
also installed via Recommends by iceowl-extension.
