I hot added a new drive to my system. It shows up in /proc/scsi/scsi and
in /var/log/messages:

udev did not create a /dev/sdd (or any /dev/sd*) file for this device.
/etc/init.d/udev restart does not correct the situation.
wavetail:/home/ivan# ls /dev/sd?
/dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc
wavetail:/home/ivan# /etc/init.d/udev restart
Stopping the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd.
Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd.
wavetail:/home/ivan# ls /dev/sd?

The udev documentation is woefully inadequate here. It should
indicate clearly what the user should do to add (or retry adding) a hotswap
device, and what debugging information can be gathered if this is
unsucessful.

Udev no longer creates any device nodes. This is handled by devtmpfs. So
I'm closing this old bug report.
