kde control panel shows existing network interfaces.

... but ath0 isn't listed because it's created by wlanconfig,
on demand.

so there is a catch 22 situation.  ifconfig won't know about
ath0 until wlanconfig is run, and wlanconfig cannot be run (as the
pre-up command) because ath0 doesn't exist.

Actually, you can run wlanconfig as a pre-up command, even if the
physical interface does not exist yet.
