Running an inferior Octave process in emacs24 is not working with the version of Octave currently in unstable (3.8.1). The following hangs for me:

   emacs24 --no-init-file --eval '(run-octave)'

With the most recent version of octave.el, taken from the upstream bzr repository, it works for me:

   wget
http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/lh/emacs/emacs-24/download/head:/octavemod.el-20091113204419-o5vbwnq5f7feedwu-1028/octave.el
   emacs24 --no-init-file --load ./octave.el --eval '(run-octave)'

Please, consider updating the octave.el file in the emacs24 package.

Notice that the new upstream file octave.el replaces both octave-inf.el and octave-mod.el in version 24.3 of emacs24, currently in unstable.

Cheers,

Rafael Laboissiere
