I don't have portmapper installed and fam does not start in this
configuration.
As portmapper is a "Recomends", fam should not fail to start if it can't
register with it. It should start and not provide the RPC service for
monitoring remote files, just that.
Also, failing silently is not good! If the daemon fails, it should
return a non 0 value _and_ the init script should take that value into
account, not retrn 0, blindly!
Please fix this.
