Package: libapache-mod-mono
Version 1.0-1
Tags: patch

The attached patch heavily modifies the mod-mono build process. IMHO,
the current debian/rules file is a bit hard to follow, and enabling a
mod_mono package for Apache 2.0 was unneccessarily hard. This patch
modifies the debian/rules file to be easier to follow, and allows a
straightforward pattern to be applied so that the Apache 2.0 version can
be easily generated. The php4 package has been the main source of
inspiration.

The patch also does the following:

      * Build-depend on apache2-dev. This currently resolves to apache2-
        threaded-dev, which may or may not be desirable. I will revisit
        this issue at a later date.
      * Change the long description of the libapache-mod-mono package.
        The new description is, er, more descriptive, and includes key
        words that a user might search for. The same description is used
        for the Apache 2.0 package, with one modified line to reflect
        its connection to Apache 2.0.
      * Remove a duplicated line in debian/docs.
      * Update debian/TODO to include more ideas that testers can work
        on.
      * Rephrase README.Debian to be more user-friendly, and reflect the
        fact that there is an Apache 2.0 package.
      * The mono.conf file is now libapache-mod-mono.conf, and it is
        installed as mod_mono.conf. There is also libapache-mod-
        mono.info, and libapache2-mod-mono.conf. This makes it easier to
        spot which files belong to which package.
      * Add a watch file.
      * Some small spelling fixes and rewordings.
      * Update the changelog and bump the Debian revision number.

The debian/rules file uses temporary build directories to separately
configure and build the apache and apache2 packages. All targets are
split so that they have sub-targets for the different packages. This
should allow for straightforward placement of exceptions and special
cases, as well as scale for more versions of the packages. (Apache2 may
warrant a -prefork and a -threaded version -- but as said, I'll return
to this in the future.)

The patch modifies debian/rules so that the copying of config.sub and
config.guess are removed. I can't check the changelog of debian/rules to
see if this has been explicitly included for some reason, because
svn.debian.org has a subversion locking issue at the moment. However,
should it be neccessary, it can be easily included.

Finally, I have not duplicated the debconf interface for the apache2
package. IMHO, using debconf here is quite unneccessary. The package
shouldn't need to ask for any complicated input from the user; if the
user installs the package, it is assumed that they want to use it. If
they don't, they should uninstall it. I propose to remove the debconf
parts. They can be reintroduced if there is something more complicated
that the user must decide (even then, chances are sane defaults will be
better). The patch does not remove debconf from the Apache 1.3 packages.

Cheers,
