Package: unicode
Version: 1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
whenever I try to type the volcan salute 🖖 in any program (tested in
thunderbird, terminal, leafpad) it shows a square with the Unicode number in it
(01F596). When I try to type it in LibreOffice it does nothing but showing the
string I just typed (u1f596).
I installed the package unicode and the package unicode-data but it did not
change anything.
Other Unicode Signs like ā (u+0101) work properly.
Live long and prosper!
P.S.: I am not sure if I filed this bug correctly. If so I am really sorry. In
this case could you move it to the right package and so on? Thanx!

Hi Maria,
You probably found out since you reported this quite some time ago.
But, as it is described by the package property:
unicode is a simple command line utility that displays
properties for a given unicode character, or searches
unicode database for a given name.
In particular, it is not related to unicode support or unicode fonts.
It can be used thus:
$ unicode 01F596
U+1F596 RAISED HAND WITH PART BETWEEN MIDDLE AND RING FINGERS
UTF-8: f0 9f 96 96 UTF-16BE: d83ddd96 Decimal: 🖖 Octal: \0372626
🖖
Category: So (Symbol, Other)
Bidi: ON (Other Neutrals)
What you need to install is a font containing the characters you want.
Package unifont contains such a font (U+1F596 in Unifont Upper is very
pixellated though…).
Best regards,
Samuel
