It seems that the latest fglrx-driver is producing the same symptom as
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=739054, resulting in a
segfault and X does not start.
After exhibiting the symptom described in 739054, I ran apt-get purge fglrx*
and attempted to deploy the source package 15.30.1025 from amd's website, but
this did not yield success. The logs in Xorg did change at this point and
stated that there was no module for fglrx even though it was present in lsmod.
There were some other issues from the amd installer I had to troubleshoot to
get that far, as apparently something was linking for 32bit libraries that
would prevent glxinfo/glxgears/aticonfig from executing. Following some other
threads I purged i386 mesa and ran ldconfig to resolve, but was never able to
get Xorg log to indicate anything other than module fglrx not found.
Not sure what else I can do to help, My card is [Radeon R7 260X/360] per lspci.
I was able to bring X back with radeon driver from testing repo.
