Package: totem-xine
Version: 1.0.4-1
Severity: wishlist

Today, if I run:

    totem http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/aeon_flux/

...an error message pops up, telling me it doesn't have a
plugin:

    `Totem could not play 'http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/aeon_flux/'.

There is no plugin to handle this movie.

...but it doesn't give any information as to WHICH plugin or codec might
be missing. A helpful MacIntosh user tells me "when the Mac gets an
unknown format it tells you which codec you need" -- if so, that would
also be a useful feature to have in 'totem'.

As is, naive users tend to flounder, though perhaps experts know better.

BTW, I'd suspect, after reading this bug:

#330927: totem-xine: Will not play MP3 stream from Magnatune - "There is no
plugin to handle...

...that a missing codec is not the cause of the above error.
Nevertheless it would still be better to show more diagnostic
information in such errors; if the error was a false alarm today,
it could be true tomorrow.

Hope this helps...

The Xine backend has been removed a while ago. Please retest with a
current version and file a new bug report if the problem still exists.
