Subject: adduser: do not call getpwent in a loop if possible
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
X-Mailer: bug 3.3.10
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: adduser
Version: 3.42
Severity: wishlist

On systems with NSS methods like `ldap', listing all the users (to
fetch the list of all the userids) is very slow and actually will fail
in most cases, as the LDAP server limits the number of records
returned to the client. Maybe you should iterate over the specified
UID/GID range instead, and call getpwuid to check whether the UID is
taken, and use the first free one. Of course, others may argue that
this approach just slows things down on systems with the `files' NSS
method. So maybe you should add a command line switch to select which
"UID discovery method" to use.
