While testing the patch for https://bugs.debian.org/834272 (which does
work) I found these appinfo test failures in a local stretch sbuild
instance:

assertion failed: (result)
and
GLib-GIO:ERROR:/<<PKGBUILDDIR>>/./gio/tests/desktop-app-info.c:44:create_app_info:
assertion failed: (error == NULL)
I also saw at least the desktop-app-info one in a sid sbuild instance.
However, I don't get these when building upstream glib from the 2.48
branch without using a chroot - possibly DISPLAY-related?
I've only opened one bug because they're probably related.
Looking into them now.
