This looks like a misconfiguration of your terminal. Please enable
altSendsEscape or metaSendsEscape in your xterm to send the correct
sequences instead of producing the graphical characters. Or, in case
you need them (outside irssi, but not in it) you can alternatively /bind
the characters to do the change_window you expect.
