Dear Maintainer,
*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***
* What led up to the situation?
Trying to build 4.9.0-rc1 kernel with gcc 1:6.2.0-7 or 1:6.2.0-9 I get:
CC kernel/bounds.s
kernel/bounds.c:1:0: error: code model kernel does not support PIC mode
/*
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
I can build the kernel with gcc-5:
gcc-5 (Debian 5.4.1-3) 5.4.1 20161019
* What was the outcome of this action?
* What outcome did you expect instead?

This was a kernel/compiler incompatibility; see bug #841368. It is now
fixed in the upstream kernel source.
