This is caused by lt_cv_sys_global_symbol_to_cdecl being redefined on ia64 only, but not on other architectures. Thus nm_test_var has conflicting types int and char while linking conftest. This problem has been fixed in libtool on Tue Sep 14 22:10:37 2004. It seems the aclocal.m4 ships an ancient version of libtool.m4. Best, Michael

--- Begin Message ---This email closes autotools/autoreconf in packages that have successfully been built on all current release architectures. debhelper defaults to updating autotools files since January 2016, which automatically fixed many of these bugs and makes explicit updating for these packages obsolete. debhelper compat 10 defaults to running autoreconf, making manual adding of dh-autoreconf mostly obsolete.
