Package: bind9-host
Version: 1:9.2.1-2.woody.1
Severity: normal
I have scripts which used to work fine before (I guess that would have
been on systems with BIND 4.x or 8.x on them) which have the moral
equivalent of
host $q >/dev/null 2>/dev/null || echo Host not found -- skipping >&2
but this no longer works with the host(1) I have installed on this
system.
$ type -all host
host is /usr/bin/host
$ host nonesvch.org ; echo $?
Host nonesvch.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
0
$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/host
bind9-host: /usr/bin/host
If it weren't for the backwards compatibility issue, I'd list this as
"wishlist" priority, but since I can hardly be the only one who
created scripts which depended on this behavior, I guess fixing this
ought to be "normal" priority.
Thanks for considering this,
/* era */
I have no recollection of explicitly installing bind9-host -- I guess
it must have been pulled in by dnsutils at some point.

Hi,
the bind9 bug list grew too much and the Debian BIND team cannot
simply test all the reported bugs against versions not in stable, so
this is mass bug close, as either the version is no longer relevant
(because of old-old-stable 9.8.x or old-stable 9.9.5 or even older
version of bind9) or the bug was already fixed.
However, if you can reproduce the bug with a current version in stable,
please use Debian BTS 'found <bug> <version_you_reproduced_the_issue>'
command to retag the bug and reopen it.
Cheers,
Ondrej
