The symptom is that the figure object is masked by the white background, but acroread does show it in a flash. A few other things: 1. I did the same experiment in our department's machine (Solaris), and got the same result: the version of the xfig is Xfig 3.2 patchlevel 3c (Protocol 3.2) 2. If the figure object is created from a image file, such as jpg, then the exported pdf file is okay. 3. At first, I suspect it is a problem due to the ps file, but the same symptom persists if the ps file is filtered through ps2ps or even use a ps file generated by latex.
