Hadn't I used --dry-run, git-ftp would have removed my .git directory.
I understand that download is experimental functionality, but nuking
the .git directory is very serious misbehaviour.
First I reported the issue upstream, and later I created a patch for it
as well, but I think a stable update is worth considering here.
