A line like

  route remote_host 255.255.255.255 net_gateway

is common to ensure that OpenVPN can continue talking to the OpenVPN
server, even if all routes are redirected. Unfortunately, this does
not seem to work on systems with a p2p uplink, because they do not
have (need) a gateway address in the default route:

# ip r
[...]
default dev ppp0  scope link 

# route -n
0.0.0.0         0.0.0.0         0.0.0.0        U     0      0        0 ppp0

  ovpn-madduck[6986]: OpenVPN ROUTE: net_gateway undefined -- unable
  to get default gateway from system
  ovpn-madduck[6986]: OpenVPN ROUTE: failed to parse/resolve route
  for host/network: remote_host

In that case, net_gateway should not be an IP, but simply an
interface, e.g.

  route add default dev ppp0

or

  ip route add default dev ppp0

It would be nice if OpenVPN could support that, since I cannot make
it work with up/down hooks either, e.g.

  1.  up "ip route add 130.60.75.50 dev ppp0; echo"
      down "ip route del 130.60.75.50 dev ppp0; echo"
  2.  up "ip route add 130.60.75.50 dev ppp0 #"
