If you use a config beginning like this:

  /var/log/apache/*/*.log {

and there are symlinks in /var/log/apache to the real directories
elsewhere in the filesystem that contain the log files then they are
not picked up.  This is under Linux 2.4.16.  However it works on a
different machine running a 2.2.20 kernel but with the same versions
of the packages listed below.
