I dug around after running strace, and it looks like the bug lies with
the apparmor profile evince installs: the profile doesn't give evince
permission to execute gio-launch-desktop. This causes evince to pop up
the permission denied dialog, and this bug about exit code 255 is just a
case of PEBKAC / bad debugging on my end.
