Package: krb4
Severity: normal

The krb4 source package has a Build-Depends: on comerr-dev, however parts
of the package require initialize_error_table_r() which is only provided in
more recent versions of the comerr-dev package.

krb4 comes with source for a new enough version which it will attempt to
use if the installed version isn't new enough but, for reasons I haven't
fully diagnosed, this doesn't work if there is a /usr/lib/libcom_err.a
already installed (I suspect it's either not building all of the internal
one, or linking against the wrong one).

The most expedient solution would appear to be to add a version to the
comerr-dev Build-Depends: entry, which specified a version new enough to
include this extra fuction. The version in Debian Unstable at present
(2.1-1.34+1.35-WIP-2003.08.21-3) appears to be new enough to have this
function; the version in Debian Woody (2.0-1.27-2) is not.

Perhaps:

Build-Depends: .... comerr-dev (>= 2.1-1.34+1.35-WIP-2003.08.21-3) ...

or similar (that's an awfully long version number!).

Ewen

PS: This package probably happens to build in Debian Unstable because
it happens to have a new enough comerr-dev, but a more precise
Build-Depends would simplify, eg, backporting packages.

The kerberos4 packages have been removed from Debian unstable.
According to http://bugs.debian.org/358480

Mikael> I'm not maintaining it and I think that all kerberos4
Mikael> support should be removed from debian because it's
Mikael> unsecure and the kerberos4kth packages should be removed
Mikael> from future versions of debian. If you have any discussion
Mikael> with the mit krb maintainer you can let him know my point
Mikael> of view and do anything you want with the kerberos4kth
    Mikael> package you want.

It also is obsolete and has release critical bugs.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
