My laptop (with a ali5455 sound chipset) plays back with some very
strange artifacts in the audio. Checking kernel logs revealed the
following:
"ali_audio: CIV 28, LVI 27, hwptr e020, count -32
ali_audio: DMA overrun on write"
A quick search revealed some comments in the driver source for this
chipset (/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.9/sound/oss/ali5455.c)
"To get esd working you need to use esd -r 48000 as it won't probe 48KHz
by default. mpg123 can't handle 48Khz only audio so use xmms."
Following these instructions solves the issue perfectly.
Suggested Fix / Comments

ESD should probe the driver to discover the best supported sample
rate(s). Obviously, having to manually set up esd is a pain and not a
good experience for novice users who aren't comfortable hacking around
on the command line, reading kernel logs, and browsing source code to find
a solution.
This machine is a Sharp Actius MM20.
