configured to use sasl, and in /etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf fonfigure to use
pam, but cannot authenticate says the postfix log:

PAM _pam_init_handlers: could not open /etc/pam.conf
(it is world readable)
and:
PAM pam_start: failed to initialize handlers

and needs documentation how to auth, maybe from sasl/pam or via saslauthd
(which is pam capable)

This is ultimately a setup issue, not a package bug.  It is now documented in 
README.Debian. so closing.
