Comments/Problems:

When I attempted to boot off the cd, it tries to boot and then I get dumped back at the ok prompt. I copied down what I see on the screen after booting off the cd (with the welcome text removed):

[ ENTER - Boot install ] [ Type "rescue" - Boot into rescue mode ]
boot:
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x40000000 for kernel
Loaded kernel version 2.4.26
Loading initial ramdisk (1884292 bytes at 0x17408000 phys, 0x40C00000 virt)...
|
Remapping the kernel... FD Disabled
ok

I also tried the rc1 netinst (which the errata said not to use) and the August 20th business card image <http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/sparc/current/ sarge-sparc-businesscard.iso> and got the same thing.

So then I got fed up, set up a tftp server and booted off the rc1 boot image at <http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-sparc/ rc1/images/sparc64/netboot/boot.img>. The machine booted, I installed sarge ("testing") and I got to the reboot stage I hit the same problem again trying to boot off the local disk:

Rebooting with command: boot
Boot device: disk File and args:
SILO Version: 1.4.8
boot:
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x40000000 for kernel
Uncompressing image...
Loaded kernel version 2.4.26

Remapping the kernel... FP Disabled
ok

With some help, I managed to get a shell from the net install, mount my partially installed disk and replace the testing silo (1.4.8) with the stable silo (1.2.5-2). With the stable silo installed, the sun boots fine, and I have been able to complete my install of testing (minus the testing version of silo, obviously).

Although I've got it up and running, I'd be happy to install a testing version of silo on my machine if more debugging output would be useful.

Thanks,

Version: 1.4.14+git20120819-2+rm

The (32-bit) sparc architecture was last released with Debian 7.0
(wheezy) in May 2013 and was removed from the Debian archive afterwards.
Since support for wheezy has now ended and the suites have been
archived, I'm closing all the remaining bugs reported against
sparc specific packages.

While the silo package may still be used by the
sparc64 architecture in debian-ports, the Debian BTS cannot be used for
tracking bugs in ports-only packages.
