This is a follow-up of https://bugs.debian.org/891161 , I submit this new one
rather than cloning to not have to go through many messages before learning
about the current status.
Sven, I decided to not enable this functionality just yet, because I thought
that it would be nice to understand it before and be able to reply myself to
questions such as: "does it scroll up or down when moving the wheel up? how
many lines scrolls, etc?"
The missing functionality has been there for more than a decade, so waiting a
bit more shoudln't hurt much.
Unfortunately, in the last few weeks I was busy with the riscv64 port, it was
more quick and intense than what I expected. The removal of Alioth didn't help
at all, I had to migrate many projects, repos, ask mailing lists to be kept
(including cwidget-{devel,users}@ and aptitude-devel@), then tend in an
emergency to moderation of the >1k pending messages before they get lost by an
imminent change that the new admins will impose on mailing lists only announced
a few days ago, etc.
So in the end, I couldn't really investigate the problem deepeer, as well as
other pending bugs that might benefit from a soname bump. (This includes
changes and bugs that were reported in the mailing lists of cwidget* years ago,
that I now noticed due to the removal of alioth and reviewing the archive from
a very long time ago).
Now with the bulk of the administrative diversion stuff done and the riscv64
port progressing at good pace, I will be able to pay more attention to these
projects.
Anyway, so I just uploaded a version of cwidget to experimental, disabling the
code and depending on a new version of cwidget. When uploaded to unstable, I
will move cwidget there and will upload aptitude depending on the new version.
I think that this should be enough to deal with the immediate problem of the
transition.
I could have avoided that by changing the type of mmask_t to a type compatible
witht the old version long ago, but aptitude needs then binNMUs anyway, so
there's not much difference in the outcome -- althought perhaps this could have
saved you some time and trouble if done earlier, sorry for that.
Lastly, these are the changes that Sven created that will allow to enable the

Moving the wheel forward scrolls up, moving it backward scrolls down, as
you would expect.

The minimum appears to be three lines. This is also what I see in
nano(1) (with the -m option).
I didn't mean that you should reply to this, but that I like to know
exactly what I am enabling. But thanks for the info, knowing that it
behaves the same as other applications is a reassurance.
I haven't even used the mouse in terminal applications since the VT
days, before starting to use X(Free86) regularly :)
I uploaded a version with this change enabled in experimental. From my
tests, it works as described above, so I think that this is it.
I will attempt to upload a version of aptitude to go along with the new
cwidget in experimental as soon as it's accepted by FTP masters.
If you will, please keep an eye on this in the next days to
verify/double-check, and if there's something amiss please comment or
re-open.
