Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
Version: 1:2.1.20-3
WISH: make the package availble for more architectures, at least i386.

Dear maintainers

I'm the (sad) owner of an old laptop with a nvidia NV-28 graphic card (Dell
Inspiron 8500, GeForce 4200, resolution up to 1900x1200).

In spite of the optimistic claims on the xorg website [1], it turns out that
nouveau is unusable with N28 (See [2], reported 2 years ago. I've reproduced
the problems yesterday, with a freshly installed testing). Setting noaccel=1 or
trying the driver modesetting [3] do not improve the situation (checked again
yesterday).

In my knowledge, the only options to keep a NV28 working on debian currently
are:
-1- To use nvidia-kernel-legacy-96xx-dkms for Wheezy (96.43.23) or for Squeeze
-2- To use xserver-xorg-video-vesa, with any release.

The former solution allows to use the 1900x1200 graphics and 3D acceleration,
but implies to be stacked to Wheezy forever, because nvidia announced that 96xx
will no more supported [4].

The latter solution, which I prefer, allows to evolute (and e.g. stay in
testing) but does not allow to use high resolutions and 3D.

I've seen that xserver-xorg-video-nv (no 3D but high resolution) came back in
jessie for some architectures, so the natural wish would be to have it for more
architectures (at least i386), if this is technically possible.

My best regards
ric

Version: 1:2.1.21-1+rm

The kfreebsd architectures have been moved to debian-ports recently.
Since the Debian BTS unfortunately cannot be used for tracking bugs in
ports-only packages, I'm closing all the remaining bugs reported against
kfreebsd-specific packages.
