(It's tricky to connect a new Linux machine to my school's wireless network, and I hadn't yet connected.) I was in class, and I was in a hurry to launch a text editor. I tried to launch vim, but I got an error message stating that it wasn't installed. So I launched nano instead, and suffered with an unfamiliar editor (nano) for the entire three-hour lecture. Weeks later, I realize that vim _had_ been installed. You see, vim-tiny had been installed on the machine all along. It provides a 'vi' command, but no 'vim' command. ###### My suggestion Here is a suggestion which will help to prevent other people from falling into similar situations in the future. vim-tiny should continue to call its main binary 'vi', as usual. If you try to launch 'vim' or 'gvim', vim-tiny should not launch Vim. But it should display the following message, which will notify the user that vim.tiny is already installed and available: You tried to launch vim, but only vim.tiny is installed. Please install vim-gtk3 or any other full Vim package. If you have no Internet access, you may use vim.tiny for now; but note that it's very minimal. I don't think there's much to do from the perspective of this package. Possibly, there's an opportunity for enhancing the command-not-found package, but that would be a separate investigation/discussion.
