The MP4 (and AAC, I guess) file format isn't supported in the Debian
package, unlike the upstream version. According to the debian/rules
script, this is because libfaad2 isn't properly available for Debian
yet.

However, as you can see below, it has been added in the meantime. I was
able to produce a mp4-aware package by adding libfaad2-dev to the build
dependency list. The configure script picked it up and all worked fine
after fixing the

  #include "../../config.h"

directive into 

  #include "config.h"

in

  src/mp4ff/mp4ff_int_types.h
