Sometimes rsyslog ignores the rotated log files. Sample session:

# ls -lrt /var/log
:
:
drwxr-s--- 2 Debian-exim  adm         4096 Aug 18 06:25 exim4
-rw-r----- 1 mysql        adm            0 Aug 18 06:25 mysql.log
drwxr-x--- 2 www-data     www-data    4096 Aug 18 06:25 lighttpd
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm            0 Aug 18 06:25 user.log
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm            0 Aug 18 06:25 messages
drwxr-xr-x 2 zabbix       zabbix      4096 Aug 18 06:25 zabbix-agent

-rw-rw-r-- 1 root         utmp      292876 Aug 18 07:13 lastlog
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm         3668 Aug 18 07:13 auth.log
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm           87 Aug 18 07:13 debug
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm       892977 Aug 18 07:13 messages.1
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm          649 Aug 18 07:13 kern.log
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm         2067 Aug 18 07:13 syslog
-rw-r----- 1 root         adm          615 Aug 18 07:13 daemon.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root         root       26275 Aug 18 07:13 Xorg.4.log
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root         utmp      615168 Aug 18 07:14 wtmp

See how messages.1 is written, but messages is ignored? I haven't
figured out how to reproduce this, yet.

6:25 was boot time. The PC was shut down clean before. logrotate is
version 3.8.5-1. /var/log/messages is written using

*.=info;*.=notice;*.=warn;\
        auth,authpriv.none;\
        cron,daemon.none;\
        mail,news.none          -/var/log/messages

Regards
Harri

Closes: 720096
Changes:
 rsyslog (8.2102.0-1) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * New upstream version 8.2102.0
   * Bump Standards-Version to 4.5.1
   * Update Homepage URL to use https://
   * Set upstream metadata fields: Bug-Submit, Bug-Database, Repository,
     Repository-Browse
   * Remove some left-over news bits
   * Merge logrotate rules.
     We only want a single postrotate to avoid having a SIGHUP getting lost
     due to race conditions, leading to files not being rotated properly.
