Package: xen-system-amd64
Version: 4.11.4+107-gef32c7afa2-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When booting in Xen mode my system doen't load microcode, I suposse this is the
reason I have a line in /var/log/kern.log saying:

|Jun 28 17:09:28 xuxa3 kernel: [ 3.013020] Performance Events: unsupported
p6 CPU model 79 no PMU driver, software events only

And perfomamce is degraded:

When booting the system in normal mode, no xen mode, the first two lines
written in /var/log/kern.log say:
| Jul 5 14:05:17 xuxa3 kernel: [ 0.000000] microcode: microcode updated
early to revision 0xb00003e, date = 202
1-02-06
| Jul 5 14:05:17 xuxa3 kernel: [ 0.000000] Linux version 4.19.0-17-amd64
([email protected]) (gcc version 8.3.0 (Debian 8.3.0-6)) #1 SMP
Debian 4.19.194-1 (2021-06-10)

In xen mode the first line insn't written at all.

I can't remenber if the first time I installed xen the microcode was loaded or
not, but as long as I can check the microcode isn't loaded and the system
performance is clearly degraded.

  Yours,

    Jose L.

Hi José, Andy,

When booting Xen, you indeed need to provide the ucode=scan hypervisor
option to make it search around and load microcode early enough.

This is also documented in the /etc/default/grub.d/xen.cfg file in the
xen packages now.

Thanks Andy, for answering.

Setting to done now.

Hans
