Calling tempfile with "-d /a/directory" doesn't have any effect if the
environment variable TMPDIR is set, too. IMHO the directory to place the
temporary file should be searched in a diffent order:
a) The directory specified by the --directory argument, if it is writable.
b) The directory specified by the environment variable TMPDIR, if it is
writable.
c) The directory /tmp.
Now, a) and b) is reverse, but most programs I know act in such a way that
command line switches override environment variables.
