When updatedb was run by cron, an error would be mailed to root. With
systemd, this is not longer the case.
I changed something in /etc/updatedb.conf and introduced a syntax error.
I realised that only some days later, after noticing that some files
were not present in the mlocate database.
updatedb should notify something when it sees an error instead of
failing silently

Hi,
mlocate has been removed from Debian, and has been replaced with plocate.
I'm going through the list of mlocate bugs to try to figure out if any of
them are relevant for plocate.
However, this isn't really something updatedb, or any other periodic job,
can do much about. (What would it do; call out to /usr/sbin/sendmail on
syntax error? What about on a crash?) If a service on your system fails, it
is your job as admin to notice that. If systemd does not give you the
adequate tools to do so conveniently, that may very well be a (wishlist) bug
against systemd -- but it is not updatedb's fault, and cannot be reasonably
fixed there.
